Political Chaos Unleashed: India vs. Bharat Battle Heats Up!

The BJP has been critiquing the newly formed opposition bloc, INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance), by repeatedly asserting that the name ‘India’ carries remnants of colonial history. A fresh controversy has emerged between the NDA and the INDIA bloc due to invitations to a G20 summit dinner hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, which featured the inscription ‘President of Bharat’ instead of ‘President of India’.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), led by Mohan Bhagwat, intends to modify the country’s Constitution by removing the word ‘India’ in favour of ‘Bharat’. He stated, “Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar wrote in the constitution— ‘India That Is Bharat.’ But Modi and RSS, who hold a contrary view to Babasaheb, want to amend the constitution. Why do Bhagwat and Modi harbour such a strong aversion to Babasaheb?” Sanjay Singh expressed this sentiment in his post on ‘X’.

RJD MP Manoj Jha responded to the name change by remarking, “It has only been a few weeks since we named our alliance as INDIA, and the BJP sending invitations with ‘Republic of Bharat’ instead of ‘Republic of India’.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized PM Modi, stating, “Modi can manipulate history and divide India to Bharat, a Union of States. But we will not be deterred. Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation And Trust. Bharat will prevail! India will triumph!”

In response, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh questioned why there was an issue with using the term ‘Bharat’. He asked, “Why are you feeling ashamed, Jairam Ramesh? Our nation has been called Bharat since ancient times and is even mentioned in our Constitution. They are attempting to create misunderstandings for no valid reason.”

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari criticized the Modi government, asking how the name ‘India’ could be removed. He said, “PM Modi had introduced initiatives like ‘Make in India,’ ‘Skill India,’ ‘Khelo India’ BJP appears to be averse to the term ‘India’. Article 1 of the Constitution states ‘India, that is Bharat’ How can the name India be eliminated?

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar asserted that the name of the country was ‘Bharat’ and would remain ‘Bharat.’ He remarked, “They seem to have objections to everything, and I do not wish to comment further on them. I am a ‘Bharatwaasi’; the name of my country was ‘Bharat’ and will always be ‘Bharat’. If Congress has an issue with this, they should address it themselves.”

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated, “While there is no constitutional objection to referring to India as “Bharat,” which is one of the country’s two official names, I hope the government will not disregard “India,” which has a rich history and global recognition. We should continue using both terms rather than relinquishing our claim to a name steeped in history.”

Regarding the G20 Summit dinner invitations at Rashtrapati Bhawan, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah expressed, “In our Constitution, it is referred to as the ‘Constitution of India’. India is a widely recognized term for the country; changing it to ‘Bharat’ may not be necessary.”

Earlier this month, Mohan Bhagwat suggested using the name “Bharat” instead of India and encouraged people to adopt this practice. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal also proposed during the recently concluded monsoon session in the Upper House that the name ‘India’ symbolizes “colonial slavery” and should be removed from the Constitution.
